Freeburn Law is Proud to Support the Ronald McDonald House of Hershey

Being admitted to the hospital due to a serious illness can be an overwhelming time for anyone, but it can be an especially difficult time for children and their families. In 2016, 28,472 patients were admitted into Penn State Health’s Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, including children.

These patients traveled far and wide seeking medical care at Hershey Medical Center due to its prestigious rankings. U.S. News & World Report recognized Hershey Medical Center as the best hospital in south central Pennsylvania and the number 4 hospital in the state.

Because of how far people travel and how expensive medical treatment can be, it becomes difficult for all family members to stay with one another in one place.

The Ronald McDonald House of Hershey was created to keep families together by providing temporary housing for out-of-town families and children being treated at Penn State Children’s Hospital.

With donations received by the organization, they are able to support the operations of the Ronald McDonald House as well as the Ronald McDonald Family Room.

While the Ronald McDonald House was created off the premises of the hospital where seriously ill children may stay with their families, the Ronald McDonald Family Room® is located within the Children’s Hospital. The Family room provides sleeping space for patients who are too sick to leave the hospital as well as their family members, allowing them to be as comfortable as possible during their stay.

Services are provided at no cost to guests using the Ronald McDonald House and Ronald McDonald Family Room. This is all made possible by volunteers, monetary donations, and in-kind donations.

Freeburn Law is proud to donate and support this incredible organization and encourages others to get involved too.

Don’t Forget to Set Your Clocks Back – Daylight Savings Time Ends Sunday November 5

This Sunday, November 5th, the United States will “fall back” an hour as daylight savings ends. While a majority of smartphones, computers and DVRs will automatically adjust to the time change, there are still some clocks that will require a manual set back. Therefore, make sure all manual clocks are set back an hour before going to bed this Saturday to enjoy an extra hour of sleep.

In addition to setting your clocks back, it would also be an appropriate time to make sure all smoke detectors are working properly as winter approaches and families begin to snuggle up by the fire. Daylight savings time ending means it will begin to get darker earlier. Here are some safety tips you should keep in mind:

Enjoy your extra hour and be sure to stay safe on and off the road!

Have a Safe and Happy Halloween from Freeburn Law!

Halloween is right around the corner, and children and families throughout Central Pennsylvania are preparing their costumes and decorating their homes for a frightful, fun night.

Even though Halloween is an exciting holiday for children and families to enjoy, there are important safety tips that you should discuss with your children. At Freeburn Law, we want everyone to have a fun filled and safe Halloween.

Whether you plan to trick-or-treat with friends, dress up for a costume party, or stay at home to hand out treats here are some important safety tips to remember.

Pedestrian Accidents

Due to increased foot traffic on Halloween, drivers are at greater risk of hitting a pedestrian

Drunk Driving Accidents

It is important to NEVER drink & drive – Lots of people have Halloween parties to celebrate with friends and family. Regardless of how much you may drink at a party, never get behind the wheel of a vehicle. You are putting yourself and everyone on the road in danger.

Abductions

With many children and young adults out for treat or treat, there may be predators lurking. This is when you need to go over stranger danger with your children. Remind your kids, that no matter what, a stranger is someone they do not know. And if someone tries to talk to them, or calls them to come over to a vehicle, no matter what, if they do not know the person, just ignore them and walk in the opposite direction.

Candy Safety

A few simple rules regarding Halloween candy

At Freeburn Law, we want to wish everyone a safe and Happy Halloween!

Remember to use the buddy system, avoid strangers, use the sidewalk and NEVER drink and drive!

Hunting Safety

Hunting Safety Tips from the PA Game Commission

This coming Monday marks the start of the Pennsylvania hunting season. It is a popular past-time in Central PA, and every year the news is scattered with stories of hunting accidents throughout the country. Freeburn Law wants to make sure you know where to go to find hunting safety tips online, to help keep you injury free this season.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission website is a great resource for local hunters. The PA Game Commission lists hunting safety tips such as securing yourself in a fall-proof restraint if using an elevated platform and positively identifying your target before shooting. They remind hunters to be SMART when handling their firearms:

Safe Direction: Keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction at all times.
Make sure: Positively identify your target.
Always check: Know what's beyond your target before shooting.
Respect firearms: Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.
Trigger caution: Don't touch the trigger until you are ready to shoot.

While knowing how to handle your gun and properly identify your target, it is also important to be ready and safe in case of emergency. Know your surroundings, be fit, carry a survival kit. The survival kit should contain a signalling device, like a whistle, a basic first aid kit, and a few more things.

No matter how long you have been hunting, it is a good idea to brush up on hunting safety tips at the start of each season. Freeburn Law hopes you have a happy and successful hunting season. If you are injured in a hunting related accident, speak to an attorney today!
