Concussions Are a Hot Topic
Football season always brings up the topic of concussions. Under two weeks ago, there was an uproar when University of Michigan Head Coach, Brady Hoke, appeared to send his quarterback back into the game after an apparent concussion. Just last week, a high school football player in New York collapsed and later died after a hit in a game. Over the past year or so, the NFL has been in the news due to past players wanting compensation for long-term effects of repeated concussions. The Heads Up online training course is available for coaches to be certified in teaching how to minimize the risk and long-term effects of concussions in sports.
While the media attention towards concussions is mostly directed towards those sustained during football, concussions and other traumatic brain injuries can occur outside of sports, whether in a car accident, during a fall, and more.
Though many people recover quickly and easily from concussions, the researchers at University of Texas at Dallas' Center for Brain Health remind us that concussions can also cause serious long-term effects like memory problems, anger problems, lack of concentration, and more. It is important to immediately seek medical attention for a head injury even if the injury does not appear to be "that bad".
