Pedestrian Accident

Pedestrian accidents happen more than you know in the state of Pennsylvania. The most recent report shows that there were over 4,000 pedestrians injured in accidents involving people walking, jogging or just hanging out. A recent report also states that there were 153 pedestrian fatalities due to traffic related pedestrian accidents.

Sadly, pedestrian accidents occur on a regular basis and just this past week in Cumberland County a vehicle travelling northbound on Carlisle Pike struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian struck was a male who was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. The accident is still under investigation.  We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the man who lost his life in this preventable pedestrian accident.

Pedestrian accidents happen, but there are ways for everyone, including drivers and pedestrians, to be more aware and try to stay as safe as possible. Below are some helpful tips, some food for thought to prevent pedestrian accidents:

For Pedestrians:

  • Use sidewalks: Avoid walking or running in the street whenever possible and utilize sidewalks whenever they are available.
  • Keep your head up and alert at all times: Do not walk with your head down. Always look up, and be aware of your surroundings. Don’t walk with earbuds in, this way you can hear if a vehicle is coming close to you.
  • Don’t be distracted by your mobile device: When walking, biking or jogging always look ahead with your eyes up, so that you are paying attention to all around you. Looking down at an email, a text, even directions could cause you to lose your bearings, and not be aware of vehicles near you.
  • Be predictable: Drivers expect pedestrians to cross the street at designated crosswalks and with the flow of traffic. Therefore, only cross the street at crosswalks and when appropriate according to traffic laws.
  • Be especially cautious at night: Approximately 1/3 of all pedestrian fatalities occurred between the hours of 8:00pm and 11:59pm. Low visibility due to darkness or bad weather puts all drivers and pedestrians at higher risk of being involved in an accident.
  • Wear Bright Clothing: Try to wear bright clothing, even if you have bright strips or an LED light on your clothes. The goal is that everyone sees you, which could ultimately avoid a senseless accident.

For Drivers:

  • Keep your eyes on the road: Remain vigilant, especially after dark and in urban areas, and be on the lookout for pedestrians crossing against traffic or away from designated crosswalks.
  • Drive cautiously:  When approaching a designated crosswalk, school zone, or any other areas with heavy foot traffic, slow down and lookout for pedestrians.
  • Do not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk: Although you may not be able to see a pedestrian getting ready to cross the street, they may be. Therefore approach crosswalks with caution, especially if you see another vehicle already stopped.
  • Watch out for bikers and joggers: Many bicyclists and runners have headsets on listening to music. Many bikers assume that you as a driver are paying attention at all times, so you must be more vigilant, especially near bikers and joggers. Don’t text & drive. Don’t drink & drive. Do not take your eyes off the road or your hands off the wheel when driving a motor vehicle.
