Quadriplegia is defined as paralysis to all four limbs and a majority of the time is a result from a spinal cord injury affecting the neck area – 47% of spinal cord injuries are considered quadriplegic.
These injuries are unpredictable and involve multiple complex structures. It can be difficult to give an accurate prognosis due to swelling on the site.
Someone who suffers from complete quadriplegia has no movement below the neck. There are many complications which all require careful supervision including:
- Loss of bladder & bowel control
- Pressure Sores
- Blood clots
- Respiratory problems
- Spastic muscles
There is no cure for quadriplegia but some people do experience significant improvements over time and occasionally even total cure. This can be done through improving one’s long-term prognosis, reducing any immediate threats to one’s health, and teaching the brain and spinal cord how to function around the injury.
