How Could the Coronavirus Impact You as a Worker?

COVID-19, commonly referred to as the Coronavirus, has been all over social media and the news after its recent outbreak in the U.S.  While we know how it can impact our health, many workers have been wondering how the spread of the virus could affect them.

Prevention

Taking the necessary precautions to avoid getting the virus in the first place is one of the most important things that you can do.

  • Always wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your face
  • Use proper coughing and sneezing etiquette
  • Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer (it should contain at least 60 percent alcohol)
  • Clean your workstations, countertops, and common areas
  • Notify your supervisor if you have come into contact with anyone who has been diagnosed with the virus
  • Notify your supervisor if a family member or member of your home falls ill

Diagnosis

Despite best efforts, sometimes the spread of the virus may still occur. It is important that you check with your employer about their sick leave policy in case you need to take unplanned time off. Employers are encouraged to maintain flexible sick leave policies while the spread of the virus is ongoing. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you stay home (or leave work immediately) if you have symptoms of an acute respiratory illness or a fever (e.g. shortness of breath, coughing).
