The first time your teen gets behind the wheel of a car is a terrifying time for parents. Here are some tips you can give your teen drivers to help them exercise safe driving.
1) Follow the Speed Limit
…and all other driving rules. Drivers education classes and studying for permit tests teach the rules of the road like following speed limit, proper hand placement, proper mirror placement, wearing your seat belt, and more. Learning these rules and following is an important part of safe driving.
2) Minimize Distractions
Distractions while driving include too passengers, fiddling with the radio, eating/drinking, and texting. While there are laws in place for some of those distractions (for example, PA’s no texting law), parents should teach their teens about other distractions and how to minimize them.
3) Practice “Defensive Driving”
Defensive Driving is making sure you are paying attention to the road and cars around you, so that you can safely make last minute changes if needed. Some tips for driving defensively are to maintain a large distance between you and the car in front of you; increasing the distance as you drive faster; and being aware enough to have “escape routes” in mind if you need to quickly change lanes.
Unfortunately, you and your teen driver are not the only people on the road. Teaching your teens to practice safe driving can help minimize the chance that they will cause an accident, but it is impossible to control other drivers.
