Christmas Shopping

Christmas Shopping-Which Toys Are Safest?

Have you started your Christmas shopping yet? In 2013, the US spent over 3 trillion dollars in retail during the holiday season. The holidays are typically a happy time for families, but there can also be some dangers. One such danger is buying the wrong toy. With all of the regulations out there today, shoppers assume that a toy on the shelf will be safe. However, a study by the US Public Interest Research Group (US PIRG) is saying that that’s not true. What should you look out for when Christmas shopping?

Common Toy Related InjuriesChristmas shopping

  • Drowning
  • Poisoning
  • Choking
  • Burns
  • Cuts and Bruises

Problems Found By US PIRG

  • Unsafe levels of lead, chromium, and phthalates-These can lead to developmental issues, allergic reactions, and cancer.
  • Small parts-Some toys marketing for children as young as two-years old contain small parts that present a choking hazard to young children.
  • Excessive Noise-Many children’s toys make noise. Some of those noise-making toys have volume levels that can damage the hearing in younger children.
  • Balloons-Balloons can be inhaled when children try to blow them up. They are responsible for more choking deaths each year than any other product.
  • Batteries-When swallowed, batteries can cause internal chemical burns and fatal internal bleeding.
  • Magnets-Most toys will pass through your child when swallowed, but magnets are more dangerous. Magnets can be attracted to each other, causing holes in the intestinal walls.

How Can You Stay Safe?

  • Measure your new toy in a toilet paper roll. If the toy fits, it is a choking hazard.
  • Make sure to buy age appropriate toys.
  • Keep an eye out for toy recalls.
  • Throw away all unused parts and plastic bags. Keep receipts and original packaging.
  • Assemble the toy before giving it to your child and make sure it works properly. Batteries should not be easily accessible.
