What is Pennsylvania’s Steer Clear Law?

Pennsylvania’s Steer Clear Law was created in 2006. It was created in order to keep those in roadside situations safe. The Steer Clear Law requires motorists to move into another lane as they approach a tow truck, a traffic stop, or emergency responders on the side of the road. If you see emergency lights flashing, flares, signs, or any warning at all that police officers, tow operators, or emergency response personnel are working, you must “steer clear”, and move into a lane that is not adjacent to the situation. If you are unable to move over, you must reduce your speed.

If you do not comply with the Steer Clear Law, you could get a $250.00 fine. If you also get a traffic violation, your fine could be doubled. Injuring someone when you should have steered clear could lead to a 90-day suspension of your license.
